Chemotherapy and Infertility

Various anti-cancer treatments, including chemotherapy can entail the development of a number of long lasting side effects such as infertility. Infertility can be seen in female as well as male patients. According to research, this side effect can be temporary in some cases, and permanent in some. Not all chemotherapeutic drugs will have the same side effects. For e.g., some will affect the ova and sperms directly, causing permanent infertility, while some will harm the quality and quantity of the same. Apart from the type of drug, other factors which affect the severity of infertility are the dosage of the drug and the age of the patient. Temporary side effects include amenorrhea and irregular menses. The side effects disappear after chemotherapy is stopped. However, if the dosage of the drug is high and if the age of the patient is more, serious effects can be seen on the ovaries, leading to permanent infertility. In females, the degree of risk of permanent infertility is directly proportional to the age of the patient.

Ayurveda offers internal and external treatments for female patients in the age of 20 to 30 years, who are taking high doses of chemotherapeutic drugs and are at a risk of developing permanent infertility. These treatments can help reduce the risk of the same. We have a number of cancer patients in whom, Rasayana treatment has helped to successfully avoid the development of this side effect of chemotherapy.
