Cervical Cancer

Cervical Cancer is a Cancer that forms in tissues of the Cervix (the organ connecting the uterus and vagina). This form of Cancer is very common in ladies of developing countries. It is usually a slow-growing Cancer and may not have specific symptoms in the initial stages. It is believed that Cervical Cancer is usually caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection .This is not the only cause of Cervical Cancer. This Cancer can be detected with regular Pap smear test (a procedure in which cells are scraped from the cervix and looked at under a microscope).

Symptoms

Cervical Cancer often has no specific symptoms in its initial stages. In initial stages it may show symptoms like unusual vaginal bleeding, which can occur after sex, in-between periods or after the menopause.

Screening

Commonly used test for screening of Cervical Cancer is a regular pelvic exam and a Pap smear test. During a Pap smear test, the doctor scrapes a small sample of cells from the surface of the cervix to look for cell changes. If a Pap smear test shows abnormal cell changes further investigations will be advised.

The Pap smear test is the best way to find cervical cell changes that can lead to Cervical Cancer. Regular Pap smear tests almost always show these cell changes before they turn into Cancer. This may help prevent Cervical Cancer.
