Information about Liver Cancer

Liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world, with more than 782,000 new cases diagnosed in 2012 and around 600,000 cancer related deaths in the same year. Liver cancer is seen much more often in males than females. Average age of diagnosis of Liver cancer is around 63 years.

Liver is a very important organ in the body and it is considered to play an important role in digestion and metabolism. Hence Liver cancer mainly produce gastro intestinal symptoms which can be highly debilitating. Symptoms like nausea, vomiting and anorexia can cause severe weakness and lead to significant weight loss. Rasayu’s initial approach is to protect and restore the normal functioning of liver and this leads to rapid recovery from symptoms. It is usually seen that in initial couple of weeks the patient finds very significant relief in these symptoms and starts reporting normal appetite. Our dietician will advise appropriate diet to these patients which will help them to maintain proper nutrition and prevent weight loss. This initial approach helps to improve patients quality of life, makes him independent in performing his day to day functioning  and brings back the confidence in him which plays an important role in leading towards a favorable outcome of treatment.

Besides relieving patients symptoms and improving his quality of life our medicines also helps in restoring and preventing Liver damage. Improving liver functions helps in restoring normal metabolic functions and thereby helps prevent deteriorating of patient’s clinical condition . At the same time our Rasayana drugs helps strengthen the normal cells and protect the spread of cancer. Simultaneously it also stimulates Apoptosis (Natural cell death) in cancerous cells.

As our formulations does not kills the cells directly it does not have severe side effects like conventional anticancer therapy. As these Rasayana drugs boost immunity it not only helps prevent spread of cancer but at the same time. It also prevents relapse of cancer. In advanced cases Rasayana Therapy also helps in increasing survival of patients by more than 10 -20 folds than there expected survival.

Rasayana not only increases the survival of cancer patients by several folds but it also make them live each day of their life to its fullest in comfort of there homes, enjoying with friends relatives and loved ones.

Thus to sum up the Rasayu approach to treat Liver cancer includes

.  Symptom management.

.  Improving Quality of life.

.  Stimulating Natural death in cancerous cells.

.  Preventing spread of disease and its complications like ascites.

.  Increasing survival by several folds.

Signs and symptoms of Liver cancer usually do not appear at early stage. However people having chronic liver condition may experience these symptoms at earlier stages. Some of the most common symptoms of Liver cancer are:

.  Unintentional weight loss.

.  Anorexia (Loss of appetite).

.  Swelling or fluid build-up in the abdomen.

.  Itching.

.  Jaundice (Yellowing of the skin and eyes).

.  Fever.

.  Enlarged veins on belly.

Doctors and scientist still have not clearly understood exact reasons of Liver cancer but based on studies of various Liver cancer patients we can figure out common causes and risk factors-

.  Cirrhosis of liver- Progressive and irreversible condition causing scar in liver tissues.

.  Chronic infection with Hepatitis viruses like Hep B virus and Hep C virus.

.  Excessive consumption of alcohol.

.  Diabetes.

.  Non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases.

.  Exposure to Alpha toxins.

1.Medical history and physical examination- Detailed medical history and physical examination is required if someone is suspected for Liver cancer.

2. Imaging techniques-

Various imaging tests like Ultra sound, CT scan, MRI and PET scan helps to find suspicious areas that might be cancerous. It also can be used in diagnosis as well as to know how far cancer have spread to other organs.

3. Biopsy- A biopsy of the liver is a medical procedure in which a small amount of liver tissue is surgically removed so it can be tested in a laboratory. Liver biopsies are usually done to detect the presence of abnormal cells in the liver.

 4. Lab tests- Various blood tests like liver function test, kidney function test, blood clotting test and tumor markers like AFP are done in order to make a diagnosis and assessing the physiological condition of the liver.

In cancer care, different types of doctors often work together to create a patient’s overall treatment plan that combines different types of treatments. This is called a multidisciplinary team. Cancer care teams also include a variety of other health care professionals, including physician assistants, oncology nurses, social workers, pharmacists, counselors, dietitians and others.

Treatment options and recommendations depends on several factors:

.  How much of the liver is cancer affected?.

.  Whether the cancer has spread.

.  The patient’s preferences and overall health.

.  The damage to the remaining cancer-free area of the liver.

From treatment point of view liver cancer are classified as

1. Potentially resectable or transplantable-

Liver cancer patients of early stage with small size of tumor are considered in this category. Part of liver with tumor is surgically resected.

If rest of liver other than tumor is not in healthy condition then patient may be advised for liver transplant.

2. Unresectable-

This category includes patients with large liver tumor but yet not spread to lymph node or to any other organ, tumor near to large blood vessels or multiple liver tumors. In such condition with the help of other treatment options like ablation, embolization, radiation or chemotherapy, size of tumor is reduced to extent that surgery is possible.

3. Inoperable with only local disease-

If health condition of patient is not  permitting him to resect even small tumors, all such patients are included in this category. For such condition other treatment options like ablation, embolization, chemotherapy or radiotherapy is considered.

4. Advanced-

If cancer is spread beyond lymph node into other organ it is not treated with surgery. In such condition chemotherapy is suggested. More focus is given on palliative treatment only.
